What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are like fillings, but they are used when there is not enough tooth structure left to support a filling and the tooth is not damaged enough to need a crown.
With inlays, our dentists concentrate the entire work within the cusps, or bumps, on the chewing surface of your tooth. Onlays are more extensive than inlays. They cover one or more cusps completely. Onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns. Inlays and onlays are more durable than fillings and they last much longer, up to 30 years. They also do not weaken the tooth as much as traditional fillings. Inlays and onlays can be made of tooth-colored resins, porcelain, or gold. Thanks to CEREC® one-visit restoration technology, we can provide custom porcelain inlays and onlays at our office in just one appointment.
