What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells constructed of tooth-colored materials that cover the front of your teeth to correct problems like stains, chips, or crooked teeth. Veneers are made of porcelain or resin composite. Both materials have advantages. Porcelain veneers can resist stains better than resin, and they also mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. However, resin veneers are thinner and therefore require the removal of less of the tooth’s surface.

Before & After Photos

Dental veneers help our clients obtain the smile they desire. There are several benefits that our clients can enjoy after receiving their dental veneers. One of these benefits is that porcelain veneers can help to correct an asymmetrical smile. Even the slightest tilt in our teeth can disrupt the aesthetic symmetry of a person’s smile, but with the help of veneers, this can be corrected. Another benefit of veneers is a healthy and bright smile. With the correction of asymmetry, discoloration, and other imperfections, a client’s smile can look naturally beautiful and radiant. Do I Need Dental Veneers?

Drs. Howard and Howard may recommend veneers to repair the following problems:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Misaligned or misshapen teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Dental Veneers vs Dental Bonding

Depending on your particular case, our office provides numerous options to help cosmetically improve the look of your teeth to obtain a brighter, more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Dr. Howard and Dr. Howard are pleased to provide their patients with dental veneers and dental bonding, two options that can enhance your smile and your appearance as a whole. The distinct differences between these two cosmetic dental procedures are the extent of correction that they provide and the cost of each procedure.

Dental veneers fully redesign your smile and the presentation of your teeth while dental bonding is best to treat mild imperfections and repairs rather than an entire smile makeover. Veneers are customized porcelain shells that cover the front of your teeth to hide gaps and crooked teeth. In comparison, dental bonding is a resin that acts similar to putty to correct subtle damages, like chipped or discolored teeth.

Both of these cosmetic dental procedures are offered at our office to help correct your smile concerns, no matter the imperfections. One procedure is not better than the other; it simply depends on the extent of treatment that is required for your individual case. After coming in for a consultation, one of our dentists will be able to provide you with their procedure recommendation to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Our Philosophy on Veneers

Our philosophy at The Dental Office of Encino is to treat each and every one of our clients as we would treat our family and friends. We provide the utmost care, tailoring each procedure to the client and their particular needs to help reach their goals. At our office, we only use the most advanced dental technology in our state-of-the-art facility. This will ensure that our clients receive the treatment that deserves and the results they have longed for. We are proud to be helping our community obtain glowing smiles, one tooth at a time.

Good Candidates

Ideal candidates for dental veneers are men and women who are unsatisfied with the appearance of their teeth. Veneers are best suited for cosmetic improvement rather than a treatment for damaged teeth. Those considering veneers should have healthy teeth and free from decay. The client should also have no form of gum disease, as this can negatively affect the long-term results. It important that potential clients do not grind or clench their teeth because it can lead to further damage.

Most of all, we ask our potential clients to have realistic expectations for their veneers and to maintain proper oral care to ensure the results are lasting. Clients who are interested in receiving dental veneers should be in overall good health and ideally be a non-smoker. Although veneers are not susceptible to staining and discoloration, we ask that our clients take care of the veneers just as they would their own teeth.

The Initial Visit

During your initial visit with one of our dentists, Dr. Alan Howard or Dr. Yonathan Howard, you will be asked about your aesthetic concerns with your teeth and what you are looking to achieve. Next, the dentist will review your previous dental history to ensure that this procedure will be a safe and beneficial option for you. They will then perform an examination of your teeth to make the final determinants for candidacy. If you are considered a good candidate, the dentists will then begin the preparation steps for the dental veneer placement.

When coming in for the initial visit, it may be helpful to bring in a photograph of a smile you admire to help our dentists get a better understanding of what you are looking to achieve. Because no two smiles are alike, our dentists take extra measures to ensure that the provided smile will fit the patient’s natural proportions and overall aesthetic.

Properly Preparing for the Procedure

To prepare your tooth for a veneer, Drs. Howard and Howard remove about ½ millimeter of enamel from the front of your tooth. Then your skilled dentist will make an impression of your tooth for the construction of the veneer. Before the veneer can be placed on the tooth, it must first be properly prepared. Our dentists will check the fit of the veneer and make any adjustments necessary. Your tooth will then be cleaned, polished, and etched. Your dentist will reshape or remove part of the tooth to provide a proper fit for the veneer. This portion of the procedure is performed with a bur, a special rotary device.

Once the teeth are properly prepared, an impression of your teeth will be made and you will then be fitted for your temporary veneers. A special cement will be used to attach the temporary veneer to your tooth, and then a special light will be used to harden the cement. Lastly, our dentists will check your bite and make any needed adjustments. These temporary veneers will protect your teeth while the final set of veneers are being created.

Procedure Process

About two weeks later, you will return for your final set of dental veneers. The temporary veneers will be removed and the permanent veneers will be set in place. You may opt for a local anesthetic to be placed on the gums for additional comfort, although it is typically not necessary.

The custom veneers will be bonded to the front of the teeth and your smile will be completely transformed. Dr. Alan Howard and Dr. Yonathan Howard are expert dentists with many years of combined experience. Their knowledge of the mouth, teeth, oral care, and more specifically, veneers, allows them to provide you with the smile you have always wanted.

Caring for Dental Veneers

With dental veneers, there is no downtime required. You will be able to leave our dental office immediately following treatment. You may experience slight sensitivity of your teeth, especially when drinking hot or cold liquids. This will subside within a few days following your treatment and you will be able to fully enjoy your new smile.

It is important that you maintain healthy oral care to ensure a lasting, beautiful smile. This means brushing and flossing twice a day, as well as avoiding extremely hard candy or food.

The cost of your dental veneer procedure will vary depending on your particular case. Either Dr. Alan Howard or Dr. Yonathan Howard will examine your teeth for any pre-existing damage or conditions that may affect the final outcome of the veneers. The cost of the procedure may also increase if any additional dental treatments are being performed during the same visit. Some insurances do cover the cost of dental veneers, so we ask that you contact your insurance provider before coming in for your consultation with either of our dentists. Upon evaluation, you will be provided with your individual procedure quote.

We encourage you to contact The Dental Office of Encino with any questions or to schedule a consultation with our excellent dentists. Come see if dental veneers in Encino, California, are right for you!
